Commentary: Zephaniah
3:9-10, God will purify lips
and unify language so that all His people from all nations will be able to worship
Him in unison. In the new earth, all believers will speak the same language;
the confusion of languages at the tower of Babel will be reversed (Genesis 11). God will purify our hearts, so that the words coming
from our lips will be pure as well.
2. Jerusalem¡¦s Transformation: Scriptures
Reading: Zephaniah 3:11-13,
11 On that day you will not be put to shame for
all the wrongs you have done to me, because I will remove from this city
those who rejoice in their pride. Never again will you be haughty on my
holy hill.
12 But I will
leave within you the meek and humble, who trust in the name of the LORD.
13 The remnant
of Israel will do no wrong; they will speak no lies, nor will deceit be
found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them
afraid."
Commentary: Zephaniah
announced that on the day of God¡¦s restoration, He would transform Jerusalem.
God would release the city from the guilt of its past deeds of sin against
God. The prophet anticipated that the city would be occupied by the humble
and the powerless who place their trust in God. This new community will be
free from injustice, falsehood, and deceptive speech. They will live a
peaceful and satisfied life because of divine care, provision, and
security.
God¡¦s desire for us is that we,
the members of His church, mirror the characteristics of the restored city
of Jerusalem envisioned by Zephaniah. We have been released from the guilt
of our sin by the grace of God. We truly become God¡¦s people in the world
when we live a life of humility and dependence on God and promote justice
and truthfulness on earth. We find the foundations of this way of life in
Jesus¡¦ Sermon on the Mount (see in particular the beatitudes in Matthew
5:3-12).
3. A Call to Rejoice : Zephaniah 3:14-17, 14 Sing, O
Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your
heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem!15 The LORD
has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The LORD,
the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.16 On that
day they will say to Jerusalem, "Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your
hands hang limp.17 The LORD
your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in
you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with
singing."
.
Commentary: Zephaniah 3:14-17,
The Lord himself will
remove his hand of
judgment, disperse Israel¡¦s enemies, and
come to live among his
people. He will give
them gladness. We sin
when we pursue
happiness by cutting
ourselves off from
fellowship with God-the
only One who can
make us truly happy.
Zephaniah points
out that gladness
results when we
allow God to be with us,
we do that by
faithfully following
him and obeying his
commands. Then God
rejoices over us
with singing. If you
want to be happy
draw close to the
source of happiness by
obeying God.
4. A Great Homecoming: Scripture:
Zephaniah
3:18-20,
18 "The sorrows for the appointed feasts I
will remove from you; they are a burden and a reproach to you. 19 At that time I will deal with all who oppressed
you; I will rescue the lame and gather those who have been scattered. I
will give them praise and honor in every land where they were put to shame.20 At that time I will gather you; at that time, I
will bring you home. I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples
of the earth when I restore your fortunes before your very eyes," says
the LORD.
Commentary: Zephaniah 3:18-20, Zephaniah concluded his prophecies with a
promise from God that He would restore His exiled people and bring them to
their homeland. God will prepare the land for their return by removing all
oppressive powers from the land. Zephaniah anticipated that God¡¦s restored
people would enjoy an honored place among all the peoples of the earth.
Zephaniah reminds us
that God expects His work to be heard and seen throughout the earth. This can
happen only through our bearing witness to His salvation we enjoy in our
life.
Furthermore, the honor
God gives us through His salvation work is not for our self-glorification,
but for the glory of His name. ¡§You will be my witnesses¡¨ is Jesus¡¦ command
to all who bear His name (Acts
1:8).
5.Conclusions:
1) True Worship: 3:9-10, Worship is
so important for God¡¦s people Elements
include singing, bringing offerings, sense of community, but also purity and
healing.)
2) Jerusalem¡¦s Transformation: 3:11-13, Both humility (v. 12) and transparency
(v. 13) be needed in a life of worship before God?
3) A Call to Rejoice : 3:14-17, Zephaniah¡¦s vision was for the
nation of Judah, but we also know that this same vision could speak to the
church under Jesus Christ today due to the prophetic proclamation of
Zephaniah 3:17.
4) A Great Homecoming: 3:18-20,
God
will help us full of freedom (v. 19)
healing (v. 19), reconciliation (v. 20), recognition (v. 20) and flourishing
(v. 20).
