O
LORD, you have searched me and you know me. 2. You know
when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a
word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in-- behind and before; you have
laid your hand upon me. 6 Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Commentary: Psalm
139:1-6, Sometimes we don¡¦t let people get to know us completely because we
are afraid they will discover something about us that they won¡¦t like. But
God already knows everything about us, even to the number of hairs on our
heads (Matthew 10:30), and still He accepts and loves us. God is with us
through every situation, in every trial ¡V protecting, loving, guiding. He
knows and lives us completely, because God is the Emmanuel God. (P.1260 of NIV)
2. God is Everywhere: Psalm 139:7-12, 7 Where can
I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I
make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle
on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right
hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the
night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
Commentary: Psalm
139:7-12, There is
no way to hide from God. Life should
be honored because it has significance in the presence of God. Several
images paint a clear picture regarding the expanse of God¡¦s connection to human
life. Wherever one looks, whether to
the heavens or the depths, God is there.
The psalmist writes, ¡§If I rise on the wings of dawn, if I settle on
the far side of the sea¡¨
(v. 9). Human life is completely open to God. There are no secrets with God. Yet, the greatest affirmation here is
that ¡§your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast¡¨ (v. 10). There is
no darkness with God. The psalmist affirms that it is as if darkness and
light are the same for God. There is no hiding from God at all.
3. Respect for Life: Psalm
139:13-18, 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me
together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and
wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was
made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the
earth, 16 your eyes
saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your
book before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to
count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am
still with you.
Commentary: Psalm 139:13-18, ¡§You knit
me together in my mother¡¦s womb¡¨ (Psalm 139:13). The image
of God as knitting human beings together is powerful. In light
of God¡¦s creative work, our human life depends upon God from beginning to
end. Human life is a gift from a loving God. Because of this, we are to be
stewards of the gift of life. What we do to ourselves and others matters.
Everyone is created by God and should be valued. Our life before birth is
God¡¦s gift as surely as life after birth. As Christians we must define
respect for life by the clear teaching of Scripture.
4. POINT: 1) God
Knows Us: He
knows and loves us completely, as we seek to love God in the same intimate
way that God loves us, we must extend this love to our fellow human
beings. 2) God is
Everywhere: God¡¦s
Omnipresence is good news. He is with us, from generation to generation. 3) Respect for Life: We must affirm life, protect life, and appreciate life.
When you feel worthless or even begin to hate ourselves, remember that God¡¦s
Spirit is ready and willing to work within you.
