A priest at a Pasadena church provoked the IRS in a sermon. As tax-exempt organizations, churches are banned from campaigning for candidates. The sermon, delivered Oct. 31, 2004 by the Rev. George F. Regas, was framed as a debate involving Jesus, Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, and President George W. Bush. In September, the All Saints Church announced that it would not comply with an IRS summons commanding that the church turn over all things with political references produced during 2004 election year. The church is continuing to defy the IRS and will even sponsor a conference called, “The War, The Pulpit, and the Right to Preach”. Rev. George F. Regas and the current rector of the church, Rev. Ed Bacon are both scheduled to speak.
